Aggravated Assault

Alerts

Timely Warning

The Brown University Department of Public Safety provides this notice in compliance with the Timely Notice provision of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

Incident

On Friday, November 18, 2022, at approximately 6:20 pm, the Brown University Department of Public Safety responded to meet a Brown University community member who reported that he was the victim of an assault that occurred at approximately 4:00 pm today on Brown Street in the area of Meeting Street. The community member stated that an unknown person(s) fired an unknown projectile at him. The investigation revealed that suspect’s vehicle was gray sedan. The community member was hit in the shoulder but was not injured. The suspect’s vehicle was last seen traveling north on Brown Street.

These incidents appear to be a continuation of the projectile incidents fueled by a social media challenge affecting communities and campuses across the country. The incidents we’ve seen locally appear random — we have no information to suggest any particular group of people is targeted. The trend in these attacks indicates that those who commit these acts do so from their cars, often traveling across several communities. The projectiles are generally small gel balls that are non-toxic and designed for play.

The Providence Police Department has been notified of this incident. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Providence Police Department at 401-272-3121 or the Brown University Department of Public Safety at 401-863-3322.
