THIS COMMUNICATION IS SENT ON BEHALF OF VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, RODNEY CHATMAN
On the morning of Friday, Feb. 23, the Brown University Department of Public Safety learned through law enforcement partners that individuals at multiple K-12 schools and college campuses across the nation, including several Ivy League universities, have received emails threatening violence against people based on religious identities and political affiliations. From what we have learned, the threats do not appear to be targeted toward specific individuals or campuses, and the same language has been sent to people at multiple schools. They are nonetheless concerning.
While we have received no reports of similar threats to Brown community members, we’re providing this notification to alert students, faculty and staff to the possibility of receiving such emails. Should you receive this or any other threat to personal safety, it is important to notify DPS right away so that we can take immediate steps to investigate and to ensure safety and security on our campus.
As a reminder, if any member of the Brown community feels unsafe in any situation, call Brown DPS at 401-863-3322 or the Providence Police at 401-272-3121. For any emergency, dial 911.
