The University's Continuity Planning program encompasses policy, planning, and initiatives designed to ensure the Brown community is appropriately prepared to continue its mission of teaching and research in the event of a disaster or other significant disruption. Overseen by the Continuity Steering Committee, the elements of the program are guided by the University Continuity Planning Policy.

Continuity Plans are developed by the University and its administrative and academic departments to ensure that it can continue to operate in the event that significant physical damage or some other disruption prevents the normal availability and utilization of human and physical resources.
Brown is committed, through this program and other complementary emergency preparedness initiatives, to ensuring continuation of essential functions for students, faculty, and staff through an effective and comprehensive program of disaster prevention and continuity planning. In the event of a disaster, Brown's highest priorities will be:
- Health & safety of individuals
- Continuity of teaching and research
- Preservation of facilities
- Protection of reputation
- Safeguard from financial loss
